Vertical transmission of dengue fever: First case reported in Taiwan

A full-term female newborn (gestational age, 40 weeks; birth body weight, 2986 g) was admitted to our neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) due to respiratory distress in July 2014. Her mother had suffered from fever with general weakness 5 days before delivery. Dengue fever was diagnosed 2 days before delivery by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Taiwan. The neonate was delivered by emergency cesarean section due to fetal distress, and slight dyspnea and cyanosis were noted due to
meconium aspiration syndrome. After admission to our NICU, her respiratory distress gradually improved. Blood examinations showed a white blood cell count of 19.8X1000/mL and a platelet count of 261X1000/mL erythematous macular rash with multiple fine petechiae over her face and trunk was noted at 4 days of age without fever.

Dengue virus infection complicated with simultaneous multivessel ST elevation myocardial infarction

Dengue is a mosquito-borne tropical disease. Although cardiac involvement of dengue has been reported, there has been no report of dengue complicated with ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). We present a case of dengue complicated with simultaneous multivessel STEMI, from which the patient eventually recovered; he was later discharged uneventfully.

Improving dengue viral antigens detection in dengue patient serum specimens using a low pH glycine buffer treatment

The sensitivity was 3.042ng/mL and 3.840ng/mL for sNS1 and E, respectively. The temporal kinetics of the appearance of viral RNA, E, NS1, and infectious virus in virus-infected tissue culture media suggested that viral RNAs and NS1 antigens could be detected earlier than E-Ag and infectious virus. Furthermore, a panel of 62 sera from patients infected by DENV Serotype 2 was tested. Treating clinical specimens with the dissociation buffer increased the detectable level of E from 13% to 92% and NS1 antigens from 40% to 85%.
